Sub-$1000 PCs may be on way with new Seagate drive

Seagate has developed a new hard drive specifically for use by OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) building sub-$1000 PCs.

The ST32111 Ultra ATA-interface drive, with 2.1GB capacity, will be released to OEMs focused on "low-cost PC solutions" according to a Seagate spokesman.

The drive was not only designed for low-cost PCs, but non-traditional applications like TV set-top boxes, Seagate says. Specs of the drive include a transfer data rate of up to 33.3Mbps and an 11 millisecond average seek time.

Production of the drive will begin during the third quarter this year.
