D-Link brings out 802.11n router

New capabilities claimed to be 14 times faster than previous offerings

D-Link has released a wireless router which it claims is theoretically 14 times faster than previous offerings.

Based on draft 802.11n wireless technology, the Xtreme N Gigabit Router also uses the updates in the Wi-Fi standard to boast a potential range of six times greater than 802.11g-based devices. Other capabilities include a form of intelligent wireless Quality of Service (QoS) technology to prioritise high-bandwidth traffic such as streaming high definition video, gaming and VoIP calls.

In a statement, D-Link marketing director, Maurice Famularo, said hard wiring a network wasn't viable for some SMBs. This had seen wireless products finding their way into more applications.

The new router also bears the Works with Windows Vista logo after completing testing in Microsoft labs.

The Xtreme N Gigabit Router remains backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices and will retail for $399.
