Huawei's iPhone-looking Android smartphone to be available in late 2009

Chinese telecommunications company Huawei has announced its first Android-powered smartphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to be commercially available in the third quarter of 2009.

Huawei joins HTC in the Android operating system camp with a real production phone, along with Motorola and Kogan who have announced plans to ship devices running Google's operating system.

Details of the phone are light, but Huawei partnered with an “established design consultancy to develop a robust and user-friendly interface, creating a powerful customer experience that is able to evolve with operators’ differentiation requirements”.

The device itself has an uncanny resemblance to the iPhone.

Director of Huawei's terminal marketing department, James Chen, said the company is delighted to showcase its “much-anticipated first Android-powered smartphone”.

“As a pioneer in mobile broadband devices, we look forward to expanding a compelling mobile communications experience for end-users whilst providing customised services to our operator partners via the Android smartphone,” Chen said.
