Acer dumps Google Android netbook

Aspire One with open-source OS now unlikely

Acer's plans to launch an Aspire One netbook running Google's Android operating system have been shelved.

The netbook, which was first seen at this year's Computex, was expected to hit the market in Q3 of this year and featured the same Intel Atom microprocessor as in Acer's other Aspire One netbooks, as well as a 10in screen.

However, it now looks unlikely this machines will be made available to consumers. According to Electricpig, which cited Acer sources in Taiwan, the netbook has been dumped as "evaluation has found demand for an Android netbook is not strong".

A number of netbooks featuring Google's open source operating system were on display at Computex this year. However none of them have yet been released onto the market. A number of laptop manufacturers, including Acer and HP, are thought to be working on netbooks that will run Google's Chrome Operating System.
