Canon PIXMA reviews: inkjet multifunction devices, inkjet printers and photo printers

We show you the differences between models in the Canon PIXMA inkjet printer line-up

For home and small office users, Canon's line-up of PIXMA inkjet printers offers a huge range of printing options and extra features at a variety of prices. Below we've rounded up the Canon PIXMA printers that have passed through our Test Centre.

Home printing

If you're buying a printer to use at home, consider whether you'll only be using it occasionally, or whether it'll constantly be spooling pages for assignments and documents. Decide whether high quality photo printing is important, and whether you need extra features like networking, USB flash drive support or an inbuilt colour screen.

Canon PIXMA MP270

RRP: $79

What's Hot: Quick and simple set up over USB, reasonable scan quality, low price for included features

The Final Word: Canon's PIXMA MP270 certainly doesn't offer the best print quality available on the market, but for its $79 price tag you get a well-built product with a reasonable scanner and decent if unspectacular photo printing abilities. It's not fast, but for what you get it is cheap.

Canon PIXMA MP490

RRP: $99

What's Hot: Good photo print quality, direct scanning, easy to use

The Final Word: Not quite a bargain bin printer, Canon's PIXMA MP490 inkjet multifunction is still a decent impulse buy. It provides decent quality photo and document printing and an easy-to-use interface.

Canon PIXMA MP550

RRP: $179

What's Hot: Good quality photo prints, fast image scanning

The Final Word: Canon's PIXMA MP550 is a well-designed inkjet multifunction printer with only a few flaws. The button layout can be confusing and you might find the small screen a little frustrating, but it is a competent scanner and printer.

Canon PIXMA iP4700

RRP: $149

What's Hot: Fast, great output, built-in duplexing, bundled Easy-PhotoPrint EX software

The Final Word: The Canon Pixma IP4700 really impressed us. It is a good quality inkjet printer that produces excellent results in a short amount of time. We also liked the fact that it was exceptionally quiet. If excellent prints are what you need and you aren’t in the market for either copying or scanning features, this is the ideal printer.

What's Hot: Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, easy to use, great print quality, can print photos directly from USB flash drives

Office printing

If you're operating a home office or small business office, you'll almost definitely need reasonably quick print speeds, as well as scanning and copying features. Some offices might find an integrated fax unit useful as well.

Canon PIXMA MX350

RRP: $159

What's Hot: Simple interface, printer is full of office-friendly features like faxing and network connectivity for a good price

The Final Word: While Canon's PIXMA MX350 home office inkjet multifunction isn't the fastest printer we've seen pass through our Test Centre, it is full of features that would make it useful in a SOHO environment. It is easy to use and the moderate initial outlay and ongoing costs make it attractive to small businesses that lack large budgets.

Canon PIXMA MX870

RRP: $299

What's Hot: 300-sheet paper capacity, low ink costs, automatic duplexer

The Final Word: The Canon PIXMA MX870 is a well-balanced inkjet MFP. It delivers good performance and good features for the price. While the machine is best suited for a small or home office, its media slots and good colour output make it useful for a busy family as well.

Canon PIXMA iX700

RRP: $799

What's Hot: Produces great A4 photos, automatic duplexer can print double-sided A3 documents, draft documents are usable

The Final Word: Canon's PIXMA iX7000 offers A3+ printing and automatic duplexing, but lacks the simplicity and usability of cheaper printers. It prints slowly but its output on glossy media is fantastic thanks to the use of pigment-based ink technology.

Professional photo printing

If photograph print quality is your chief concern, then go straight to Canon's PIXMA Pro A3 photo printers. These units don't have any faxing, copying or scanning capability — while they can print out normal text documents, their pigment-based inks and extremely fine ink heads are designed for to deliver maximum print quality when printing digital images.

Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II

RRP: $1099

What's Hot: Great photo print quality, CD/DVD printing, reasonably quick

The Final Word: Canon's PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II A3+ inkjet photo printer is an easy way to print high-resolution photos as well as CD and DVD labels at home. However, with expensive consumables and a lack of configuration options, more expensive printers are actually better value.

Canon PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II

RRP: $1399

What's Hot: Great print quality for both colour and monochrome content, good ink cartridge life, good paper handling and support

The Final Word: If you have the money to run it, Canon's PIXMA Pro 9500 Mark II A3 photo printer will blow you away with its image quality on both full colour and monochrome content. It produces prints we'd be happy to hang in a gallery.
