Canon builds 60 millionth EF digital SLR lens

Canon has produced 10 million lenses in just 13 months

Digital camera manufacturer Canon has announced the production of its 60 millionth lens for the EF digital SLR camera mount. These lenses, for Canon's EOS range of film and digital SLR cameras, have been produced since 1987.

While the first 10 million Canon EF lenses took eight and a half years to produce and sell, the most recent 10 million took only 13 months to complete — a testament to the growing popularity of digital SLR cameras with consumers. Newer video-enabled digital SLRs have also been adopted recently by filmmakers for their excellent image quality and interchangeable lens mount at prices that are much lower than professional video equipment.

Canon does not currently produce an interchangeable lens camera that is not an SLR, and neither does its chief competitor Nikon. There are rumours of an imminent announcement from Canon about an interchangeable lens camera, including speculation that the new system could be adapted to mount EF SLR lenses.
