Jawbone finally releases UP fitness app for Android

Jawbone's Up fitness-tracking wristband is now compatible with Android via a free app available for download in Google Play.

Android fans hungering for access to Jawbone's UP fitness-tracking wristband are in luck: On Tuesday the company introduced a free app in Google Play.

The popular $130 wearable lifestyle gadget has so far only been compatible with iOS since its re-release last November. As there isn't a web service feature to see the data your wristband collects, an Android app greatly expands availability outside the Apple ecosystem.

As many iOS users already know, the UP app provides you with charts so you can visualize the sensor data your wristband collects. How much sleep you get, how many calories you burn, and how many steps you take are all diagrammed within the app for daily data tracking. Additionally, UP lets you find friends who also own a wristband so you can share information.

Jawbone says by using the UP wristband and app, its users become more conscious of their health habits. UP collects information on meal logs, workout plans, and steps taken, and though the band does a lot of the work for you, you still have to enter information to complete the picture.

You can either manually enter the calories you consume each day and calories burned by exercising in the app, or let UP estimate that data for you.

Jawbone expanded to the UP app beyond just the Android app: Tech enthusiasts in 25 countries throughout Asia, Australia, and the Middle East will have access to UP next month. Europeans can download the app right now. Jawbone also added 11 new languages for iOS users as part of its international rollout of Up.
