Optus unveils new BYO mobile plans

Optus has unveiled three new BYO, SIM-only mobile phone plans

Optus has unveiled three new BYO mobile phone plans including two without the need for a fixed contract and one available on a 12-month plan.

The revamped BYO plans are targetted at users who already have an unlocked mobile phone or smartphone.

All three of the new BYO plans will work on the Optus 4G network, provided the mobile device is compatible with the 1800MHz 4G network band.

The new BYO offerings include $20 and $40 plans available on a month-to-month term, and a $60 plan available only on a 12-month contract. However, the $60 Optus SIM plan is an "introductory offer" that will revert to $65 per month from Monday 1 July.

The $20 and $40 BYO plans plans include 200MB and 1GB of data per month, respectively, and offer $200 and $500 worth of included calls and text value. The latter can be used for standard SMS and MMS messages, standard voice calls to Australian fixed lines and Australian mobiles, calls to 13/1300 and 1800 numbers, and voicemail.

The $60 BYO plan offers 2GB of data and unlimited calls, SMS, MMS and voicemail.

All three plans bill excess data at 25 cents per megabyte (MB) while data usage is counted in kilobytes (kB).

Optus' Managing Director of Customer, Vicki Brady, said the new BYO plans have the same rewards system in place as regular post-paid contract plans.

"Whether you’ve waited in line for five hours to buy the latest smartphone or are still using a five year-old mobile phone, Optus BYO plans deliver great value and all the rewards our post-paid customers enjoy."

Among the rewards offered to Optus customers include $10 movie tickets to Hoyts and selected independent cinemas, as well as the ability to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

More details of the Optus BYO plans can be found on the Optus website.
