HP targets pros with new Z workstation and monitors

Three new monitors, one new workstation in two form factors

HP has revitalised its professional monitor and workstation line-up, launching three budget business monitors and a new workstation designed for high-end users.

The Z230 workstation is available in both tower and small form factor (SFF) configurations, with a choice of fourth-generation Intel Xeon and Core processors. Up to 32GB of RAM, up to three hard drives or SSDs in RAID, DVD, Blu-ray, four PCI-Express slots can be pre-installed; It can be purchased with Windows 7, 8, or three enterprise Linux variants. The system is widely adjustable to suit a wide range of professional users.

HP is quoting the high (92 per cent) efficiency of its Z workstations’ power supplies as evidence of its environmental credentials, as well as boasting the overall lower cost of ownership due to reduced power usage. Workstation graphics cards from both NVidia and AMD are supported. There’s also a fast-charging USB port on the tower variant of the Z230, in addition to ten other external USB ports and a host of inputs and outputs.

The Z230 starts from $1,799, and will be available from August.

HP’s trio of new monitors range from $399 to $599, and vary from 22- to 24-inch screen sizes. All the panels use IPS technology, with better contrast and viewing angles than regular TN screens popular with cheaper brands — the cheaper screens support 95 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut standard, while the most expensive Z24i has 99 per cent support. The smaller two monitors have 16:9, Full HD 1920x1080 pixel screens, while the 24-inch has a 1920x1200 16:10 display.

The monitors will be available in August.
