iiNet distributed 1.2 petabytes of data in December 2013

Content triples previous corresponding period

iiNet’s content delivery network (CDN) distributed 1.2 petabytes (PB) or 1228.8 terabytes (TB) of video and music data in December 2013 alone.

iiNet is a Perth-based Internet service provider (ISP) founded in 1993 by Michael Malone and Michael O’Reilly, the former of which left the company earlier this month.

According to the ISP, the 1.2PB figure equates almost 16 years of high definition video content.

The number is nearly triple that of December 2012 during which data distribution amounted to about 435TB. In December 2011, it stood at about 100TB.

iiNet did not reveal the number of customers who use its CDN services.

The company uses its CDN to deliver unmetered content for its customers beyond monthly data quotas; done via iiNet TV with Fetch, Xbox Live, ABC iView, and more than 180 streamed radio stations and a number of commercial customers.
