ACA: Self-install ADSL kits hinder home security systems

The ACA has issued a warning to all potential ADSL subscribers with back-to-base security alarm systems installed in their homes to stay away from self-install ADSL kits.

It has advised a self-installed service could stop security systems from correctly sending warning messages to the security systems provider.

The ACA said security systems affected by ADSL were those which ran off a phone line and were set up to send an alert message directly to the security company when triggered.

"Interference can occur if the ADSL service is not separated from your normal phone service before it reaches the alarm system," acting ACA chairman, Bob Horton, said. "The ADSL service may feed directly into the security system when the security system is activated."

Additionally, the ADSL service itself might be affected under alarm operating conditions, when all security sockets beyond the system were isolated, Horton said.

Consumers wishing to sign up to ADSL can avoid conflict between their security system and ADSL service by having the service professionally installed with a phone line filter, he said.

Consumers should also contact their security systems provider to inform them of the introduction of an ADSL service to their telephone line, Horton said.

"Security providers are becoming increasingly aware that ADSL can compromise security services and should be able to recommend the best solutions to ensure correct monitoring," he said.
