Samsung Gear VR goes on sale in Australia

Virtual reality market heats up with rival LG weighing in

Samsung has put its Gear VR headset on sale in Australia less than 24 hours after LG announced its foray in the virtual reality market.

The Gear VR makes use of the Galaxy Note 4’s high resolution screen to present immersive virtual reality content. The accessory can be purchased online, or from Samsung’s Sydney and Melbourne Experience stores from today for $249.

Samsung partnered with Oculus to develop the Gear VR. It uses the 5.7-inch, 1440p display of the Galaxy Note 4 and its optical lenses provides a 96 degree field of view. The physical interface consists of a touchpad, a back button and volume keys, which work with the Samsung phablet over a microUSB connection.

Airline Qantas announced it will be trialling Gear VRs as an in-flight entertainment option. Passengers in first class will have the opportunity to explore tourist destinations and Qantas products using the VR headset.

The accessory was initially slated for release in November of 2014.

Samsung’s release of the Gear VR follows the news rival LG has partnered with Google on the VR for G3 headset. LG's headset is a modified version of Google's Cardboard and works using the 5.5-inch, 1440p screen of its flagship G3
