Optus moves into wearables space with Cash by Optus

Allows customers to make contactless payments with new compatible mobile accessories

Optus has launched its new mobile payment facility, Cash by Optus whereby customers with compatible smartphones can make contactless purchases under $100.

The telco has released two accessories, a band and a sticker, that can be adhered to customers' devices, enabling a wave and pay transaction to be made using Near Field Communication (NFC) and Visa payWave technology.

Optus said the band accessory is a "flexible way" to make a purchase without a wallet or phone and the sticker is ideal for customers who go everywhere with their mobiles, but would like to be able to make transactions without the need for cash or cards.

Additionally, it has rolled out Cash by Optus SIM, designed for customers to use Cash by Optus on their NFC-ready smartphone without a payment accessory. The SIM allows transactions to be made using just an Android smartphone.

Optus acting managing director of product and marketing, Ben White, said Cash by Optus Payment Accessories was the natural next step for the company since it was the first Australian telco to introduce a mobile payment solution to the market in 2014.

“Backed by two trusted names, Visa and Heritage Bank, Optus is continuing to look at ways to expand Cash by Optus and bring innovative products and services to our customers. It has always been our aim to bring the ease and convenience of Cash by Optus to as many customers as possible, across a range of smartphones and these new payment accessories enable us to do just that,” he added.
