Telstra joins Asian wireless alliance

Telstra says it has joined with four international telcos to form an Asian wireless broadband alliance aimed at business travellers.

The Wi-Fi alliance includes Korea Telecom, China Netcom Corp, Malaysia's Maxis Communications Berhad and Singapore's StarHub and aims to service business travellers who need to stay connected to the Internet with hotspot connections at airports, hotels and other business hubs.

A pilot project to establish inter-operator roaming will be rolled out by the end of July 2003 according to Telstra marketing spokesman Christian Tuerk, who said customers will be served by more than 20,000 locations belonging to alliance members.

While a specific product is yet to be launched, a memorandum of understanding has been signed in a bid to drive wireless broadband services for business travellers.

The spokesman said the telcos will establish a recognised alliance brand once the roaming between members is fully operational.
