Google's heavy duty smart speaker will finally make its way to Australian customers, almost a year after its official reveal.

The Google Home Max will be available in Australia from August 9 via JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, David Jones, The Good Guys, Officeworks and The Google Store for a recommended retail price of $549.

More of a smart subwoofer than a smart speaker, Google say the new Google Home Max is equipped with two 4.5-inch woofers (each with 22mm of excursion) and is about twenty times as powerful as the regular Google Home.

Fortunately, like the regular Google Home and Google Home Mini, the Google Home Max comes with all the same smart home, Assistant and voice-led music playback features you'd expect. The speaker supports YouTube Music, Google Music, Spotify and Deezer.

It even supports voice recognition for up to five users - allowing it to recognise who it is speaking to and adjust the playlist accordingly.

The key difference here compared to the regular Google Home is a new feature called Smart Sound, which promises to adapt the playback of the Max to suit the environment within seconds.  The Google Home Max also supports aux-in playback and can be easily synchronized with other Google and non-Google speakers via ChromeCast.
