Happy iPhone Day: Here's everything Apple just announced

If you've been waiting for Apple to finally announce a new iPhone that doesn't cost more than $1000 to own, this week bears good tidings in the form of the 2020 iPhone SE.

Following on the heels of the updated, budget-friendly iPhone SE, Apple has finally unveiled its full lineup of new iPhones ahead of the holiday season.

Not including the new HomePod Mini smart speaker, there are four new models on offer here - the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max - with plenty of spec sheets and new features to break down.

If you’re short on time and you just want the quick rundown on what to expect from each, we’ve got you covered.

Like the original HomePod, the HomePod Mini boasts a slick mesh fabric design, Siri integration and an emphasis on dynamic high-quality sound.

The twist? It’s both smaller and cheaper than the original. The HomePod Mini also touts the same ultrawide band connectivity introduced in last year’s crop of iPhone and even supports third-party music services like Amazon Music (though not Spotify). Apple cites deep integration with your iPhone as a selling point over the many other smart speakers on the market, allowing you to send messages and access other apps hands-free.

In Australia, the HomePod Mini is priced at AU$149 and will be available to preorder from November 7th ahead of a November 16th launch.

The new iPhone 12 adopts a flat-edge look inspired by the iPad Pro, it features the same 6.1-inches of screen but manages to be 11% thinner and ups the ante when it comes to the resolution by incorporating the Super XDR Display introduced in last year’s iPhone 11 Pro. The device also benefits from a new durability-focused technology called Ceramic Shield, which promises a fourfold leap forward in drop-protection.

As teased by the invite for the event itself, the big advancement coming this time around is 5G connectivity. This is paired with the introduction of Apple’s new A14 Bionic processor, which (like the A13 Bionic) promises to cement Apple’s lead when it comes to high-end smartphone hardware.

Like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 packs in a dual-lens rear camera that pairs a 12-megapixel (f/1.6) main lens with a secondary 12-megapixel wide angle lens. There’s also support for new MagSafe wireless chargers that promise to cut down on the finickiness of aligning magnetic coils.

In Australia, prices for the iPhone 12 start at AU$1349 and the device is available in three sizes: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. Apple says the device will go on pre-order on the 16th of October and launch on the 23rd.

Clocking the same high-end specs, features, design and 5G connectivity as the mainline iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Mini squeezes things down into a smaller 5.4-inch form-factor.

Since it shares so much with the iPhone 12, there’s actually not a whole lot to say about it but if you’ve been hoping for an iPhone that’s a little more pocket-friendly than the usual, this might be the one you’ve been waiting for.

In Australia, prices for the iPhone 12 Mini start at AU$1199 and the device is available in three sizes: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. Apple says the device will go on pre-order on the 7th of November and launch on the 13th.

iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro gives the look and feel of the regular iPhone 12 a makeover with more premium materials like stainless steel. The short version here is that it’s everything that the iPhone 12 is - and more. It adopts the new rounded look, runs on the A14 Bionic Processor and comes protected by Ceramic Shield.

Relative to its 2019 counterpart, the screen is a little bigger at 6.1-inches but the same when it comes to quality. Like last year’s iPhone 11 Pro, the most tangible upgrade here is the introduction of a 12-megapixel telephoto (f/2.2) lens. The iPhone 12 Pro also offers support for HDR and Dolby Vision video capture at 4K and 60FPS. Apple is also packing in 2x optical zoom and support for RAW capture with deep fusion.

The iPhone 12 Pro also adopts the same LiDAR tech introduced by the most recent iPad Pro for more reliable and comprehensive AR and faster autofocus.

In Australia, prices for the iPhone 12 Pro start at AU$1699. The device comes in three sizes - 128GB, 256GB and 512GB - and will go on pre-order alongside the iPhone 12 on October 16th ahead of an October 23rd launch.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

Like the iPhone 12 Pro, the Max-variant of this year’s Apple flagship is arguably defined by the bump upwards in screen size from 6.5-inches to 6.7-inches. Apple is leveraging this larger size to squeeze a little more performance out of the triple-lens camera array found in the Pro, upping the optical zoom to 2.5x and improving low-light performance via a larger sensor.

In Australia, prices for the iPhone 12 Pro Max start at AU$1849. The device comes in three sizes - 128GB, 256GB and 512GB - and will go on pre-order alongside the iPhone 12 Mini on November 7th ahead of a November 13th launch.
