iDoorCam lets you see who's at the front door through your smartphone

A new Wi-Fi enabled doorbell will allow users to see who is at the front door of their home through their smartphone.

iDoorCam is described as a "digital, Wi-Fi enabled doorbell" that allows you to see, hear and talk to visitors at your front door using an app on a compatible smartphone or tablet.

The device combines a doorbell button, a video camera, a built-in microphone and a speaker to a small housing that measures just 7mm in diameter.

When a visitor rings the doorbell, an alert will be sent to your smartphone or tablet where you can ignore it, or choose to accept the call. The device will then display a video feed, and you can hear and speak to the visitor at your front door through your smartphone or tablet.

The iDoorCam will work even when you aren't at home, provided your smartphone or tablet has wireless or 3G/4G data available. iDoorCam says the device will initially be compatible with iPhone and iPad devices, with an Android app expected to launch early next year.

The iDoorCam will work internationally, including Australia, but requires an existing hard wired doorbell. The product will simply replace the door chime button on the outside of your house, and attaches to the existing doorbell's power wires.

The device will work in all weather conditions, and the camera is infrared so it claims to function at night time. iDoorCam says the product is finished in a polycarbonate plastic that will not rust and not interfere with the Wi-Fi signal that communicates with your smartphone.

iDoorCam says the camera feed can be opened on demand, even when the doorbell isn't pressed. Users will also have the option to disable the internal door chime and/or the mobile alerts.

iDoorCam is currently available to pre-order through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo for US$164.95. The company says it expects to begin shipping pre-orders in October.
