Claiming to "set a new standard for entry-level smartphones", the HTC Desire 300 has a 4.3in screen, runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor.

However, the phone lacks 4G connectivity, has just 512MB of RAM and only boasts 4GB of internal memory. A microSD card slot does allow users to expand the on-board memory.

Telstra's Director of Devices, Andrew Volard, said the HTC Desire 300 will be an ideal stocking filler for the upcoming Christmas season.

"The HTC Desire 300 is a great addition to the HTC family at Telstra and I’m sure it will be a popular choice for customers who are after a high-quality but affordable pre-paid smartphone, particularly coming into the festive season."

The Desire 300 will include the company's BlinkFeed software feature, which constantly streams personalised content from various sources to the home screen.

The HTC Desire 300 will retail for $179, and will be sold exclusively in Australia through Telstra.

It will be available in stores and online from Tuesday, 29 October.
