Canon expand EOS R lineup with cheaper, compact EOS RP

Canon has expanded the family of EOS R-lens cameras it began last year, announcing the new Canon EOS RP.

Brendan Maher, Product Manager for Consumer Imaging at Canon Australia says that "the latest addition to our revolutionary EOS R portfolio and aggressive lens development roadmap demonstrate Canon's commitment to redefining photography and filmmaking."

"With a heritage of more than 140-million EF and RF lenses behind us, these new innovations mark an exciting new phase in Canon's optical leadership."

The Canon EOS RP features a 26.2-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, a lightweight magnesium alloy chassis, dual pixel CMOS autofocus, 4K movie support and comes powered by Canon's Digic 8 processor. Out of the box, the camera is designed to be used with the current crop of Canon RF lenses. In terms of look and feel, it drops some of the premium features and flourish found in the EOS R but is very-similar nevertheless. Canon are playing it up as their "smallest, lightest full-frame camera" to date.

Alongside the EOS RP, Canon also announced that six new RF lenses are in-development. Unfortunately, none of these new lenses have any sort of price or availability just yet. The new EOS R lenses are as follows:

  • RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM lens
  • RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM
  • RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM
  • RF85mm F1.2 L USM
  • RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS
  • RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM

"Just a few months ago, Canon unveiled the innovative EOS R system - the result of rethinking the future of photography and videography from the ground up," said Jason McLean, director for Consumer Imaging at Canon Australia.

"With this announcement today, we are building on our proud lens heritage and firmly committing to our new RF Mount, which will allow photographers and videographers to rethink the creative potential now available to them through our pioneering full-frame system."

No word yet on local recommended pricing for both the Canon EOS RP or any of the new lenses but the former will be available through Canon's usual retail partners from the 27th of February. You can buy any of the above through the official Canon online store.
