Spotify teams up with Google Home Mini

Spotify Australia has announced a partnership with Google, gifting Premium Family account owners a free Google Home Mini.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Google to bring the magic of voice to our Spotify Premium Family subscribers. After all, what’s more fun than sharing the music you love with the people you love,” says Alex Norström, Spotify’s chief premium business officer.
Once their account is linked to the Home Mini, users can ask the Google Assistant to control their music on Spotify, including volume and playlist selection via voice commands.

With a monthly AU$17.99 subscription fee, Spotify Family subscribers receive Premium memberships for up to 6 accounts at the same address. While cheaper than 6 individual subscriptions, users are unable to access Spotify’s student pricing of AU$5.99 per month.
Australia isn’t the first region to receive this offer either. Spotify subscribers in the US, Canada and the UK have received similar offers in the last twelve months.
Likely a bid to convert Spotify subscribers to their smart assistant of choice, it’s certainly an interesting move by Google. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Smart Home Device Tracker, 38.8% of smart speaker owners have a Google Home.
Recent speculation also suggests that Google might be looking to show off a next-generation refresh of their flagship smart speaker at this year's Google I/O 2019 alongside the more-or-less confirmed Google Pixel 3a and long-rumored Google Pixel Smartwatch. Stay tuned for more.
The Google Home Mini offer is available to both new and existing subscribers until 14th May in Australia. Details can be found on their website.
