  • Shiny without the usual drawbacks
  • Versatile camera

  • Lack of MotoMods
  • Performance falls short

Bottom Line

Though its perfectly servicable for the most part, the Moto X4 is defined more by the things that are absent from its feature-set rather than those that are present.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery life, the Moto X4 continues to live up to the standard from the brand. With everyday mixed-use, I was usually able to make it into a second day before I needed a top up. I wouldn't say battery life was short, but I wouldn't say it was particularly long either. In this respect, the X4 fits the mid-tier mold pretty handily.

The X4 does use Motorola’s TurboCharge tech, which allows it to go from flat to six hours of use in fifteen minutes of charging. However, there's no support for wireless charging via Qi or the like.

The Bottom Line

While it ticks plenty of boxes, the Moto X4 fails to make a compelling case for why should pick it over the dozens of other options in the price bracket. Even if this is arguably the best camera that Motorola have stuck in a smartphone yet, it's clear the brand have a long way to go before they compete with the heavyweights of smartphone photography.

There’s nothing truly wrong with it, but there’s also little eye-catching about the Moto X4 aside from its ultra-reflective aesthetics. It’s a phone that’s sort-of inevitably defined by the absence of MotoMods rather than the advances it makes when it comes to the camera side of things. Even last year's "shatterproof" Moto X Force felt like it had more to say.

If the Moto X4 shows us what a world without MotoMods might look like, then it's also a reminder that maybe Motorola made the right call.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
