Camera

The OnePlus 5 comes bundled with a short-but-sweet postcard from company co-founder Carl Pei, showing off what the phone’s camera is capable of. However, like any smartphone, the potential here is going to be a bit dependent both on your imagination and your surroundings.

In our view, the main camera in the OnePlus 5 is good but stops just short of being one of the greats. The landscape shots we took from our office window were color-rich but a bit detail-poor, regardless of which mode we used the camera in.

In comparison, close ups taken with the OnePlus 5 delivered greater clarity. However, both the Depth Effect mode used to generate images with a Bokeh effect and the autofocus often proved imprecise and finicky.

In terms of video, the OnePlus 5 comes ready to shoot in both 4K (at 30FPS) and 1080p (at 60FPS). Footage taken with the device looks and sounds more-or-less how you'd expect it to. It's good enough for most things - but not a major point-of-difference in the same way as the performance or battery life is.
