Best all-round TV ever? Panasonic's TH-65DX900U is both huge and hugely impressive.

Pros

  • Great all-round performance
  • True blacks displayed most of the time
  • Best upscaling we've seen
  • Great sound

Cons

  • Massive unit
  • Very expensive
  • Occasional, minor halo issues (glowing areas on dark backgrounds)

Bottom Line

Most TVs have a weakness of some kind. This one has got it where it counts in all key areas: contrast, upscaling, picture quality and usability. But it's huge and so is the price.

Conclusion

The best TVs on the market for displaying high-quality content are LG’s OLED models thanks to their amazing colours and total blacks. But upscaling is mediocre and, as such, general TV watching can look annoyingly pixelated.

The next best TV we’ve seen is the surprisingly-brilliant Hisense Series 7 ULED range which offered (until now) the best all-round performance from any LCD TV thanks to vibrant colours, great black performance and decent upscaling.

We reckon this Panasonic is even better. The black performance is a slight notch up on the Hisense and so is the upscaling and sound.

But which should you buy? If money has been no object then we’ve tended to recommend LG’s OLED TVs but the upscaling performance should give pause for thought now – if you watch a lot of regular, low-resolution TV on your TV then the Panasonic will be a better choice.

For everyone else, though, the price of $7,149 for the 65-inch TH-65DX900U (and $5,799 for the 58-inch TH-58DX900U) is going to be very hard to swallow indeed. Yes it’s a bit better than the Hisense Series 7 in some areas – but it’s more than twice the price at 65-inches. Furthermore, in the real world you can buy the 55-inch Hisense for $1500 which means you can almost buy four of them for the price of Panasonic’s 58-inch model!

As such, while we’re happy to say that this is probably the best all-round TV on the market, its value score drags it down.
