While the car is focused on sporty performance, it is still able to return excellent economy, with a fuel consumption equivalent of 57 kilometres per litre. Not burning any fuel itself, the Roadster moves pollution emissions to the power stations, which can be more easily upgraded.
First seen as a prototype in mid-2006, the Tesla Roadster is unique amongst the new range of popular environmentally-friendly vehicles in that it is powered entirely by an electric motor and batteries, with no internal combustion engine.
With a sports-focused interior, the Tesla Roadster is aimed at those who don’t want to sacrifice efficiency and the environment for performance. While there are no plans to release this car in Australia, consumer interest could provide an incentive for similar cars to be pioneered all over the world.
The car itself is recharged through a supplied unit that can be plugged into a home outlet. It takes only 3.5 hours until fully charged, and is able to travel 220 miles on a single battery.
The car is able to accelerate to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds, faster than many other petrol-burning sportscars, and almost as fast as the company’s benchmark, the Porsche 911 Turbo.
The 2008 Tesla Roadster went into full-time production last week in the USA, marking a milestone in the development of zero-emission, environmentally-friendly vehicles.
