CeBIT 2008: Going green

A big consumer hit this year was Pleo – an autonomous robot that reacts to the sight, sound and touch of users thanks to two 32-bit microprocessors, 14 motors, over 100 gears, 31 sensors and infrared vision. That includes a bunch of creepy skin sensors, too, so it'll react when you pet it.
This innovation is aimed at big-business; German-based company Rittal built a fully-operational data centre to showcase a more environmentally friendly set-up with an efficient cooling system. What you see in the photo is a cooling system that directs cool air only to units that need it, instead of to the entire room.
Intel used the Hannover event to launch its new range of Atom processors. It's the lowest-power consuming and smallest chip ever released by Intel, and is aimed at the mobile computing market.
Larger robots were also on show, with the autonomous vehicle named Caroline driving around a test track. Designed by the Technical University at Braunschweig, Germany, Caroline is a 2006 Volkswagen Passat that runs on Linux.
