Weighing in at 450 grams without a battery, the 1000D is 70 grams lighter than a 400D, making it the lightest Canon digital SLR to date. The 1000D has the same 10.1-megapixel resolution and 2.5in display as the 400D it replaces.

Both cameras have similar features — the main difference is the bundled lenses. In Australia, the 1000D will ship with either a standard twin lens kit, a single lens kit or an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS; the 450D has the more expensive options of a single image stabilising lens, a dual IS lens kit or an 'enthusiast' lens with a super-fast USM autofocus motor.

Other improvements have also been made, with battery life jumping 50 per cent over the previous model. Black and chrome models will be available. When compared with the 450D, the 1000D’s specifications fall slightly short. The 450D has the benefit of a 3in display, a better autofocus system and a couple of extra megapixels — a total of 12.2 versus the 1000D’s 10.1.

New features on the 1000D include Live View, which debuted on the EOS 1D MkIII and continued in the EOS 40D and 450D. Continuous shooting modes are also superior to the 400D’s: unlimited JPEGs are able to be captured at three frames per second, which is a marked improvement over the 400D’s 27 shots (also at three frames per second).

Canon says its newest, least-expensive digital SLR camera, the EOS 1000D, will replace the current EOS 400D in the next few months. The company bills this model as the little brother of the recently released EOS 450D — sharing many features but being available at a slightly lower price.

While both share the same entry-level market space, small differences mean that new digital SLR buyers have an interesting choice to make. The announcement was made globally on 10 June, but country-specific pricing and availability isn’t yet confirmed. Canon expects the EOS 1000D to be available nationally in late July.
