Nokia's new business-oriented phones take on the BlackBerry

Getting down to business

  • The E66 takes a different approach to the business mobile, using the slider design common in Nokia’s N and consumer series of mobiles. Nevertheless, the device’s hardware and software features are oriented towards serious business use, with a Symbian S60 software base and support for Microsoft Office and PDF documents. Microsoft Exchange support is complemented by support for a number of ISP and Internet-based e-mail accounts, which can be used with the device’s HSDPA or Wi-Fi connection. A built-in accelerometer allows the E66 to automatically determine its orientation and rotate its display if required, or silence the ring tone if the phone is turned over. Integrated A-GPS and a microSD card slot are also present. Both the E66 and E71 are slated for a July release.

  • Nokia recently announced two additions to its business-focused E phone series market, the E71 and E66. The E71 is clearly designed to compete with Research in Motion’s Blackberry range, offering users a full QWERTY keyboard to enable easy e-mailing. The E71 is the world’s thinnest QWERTY device, designed for one and two-handed use, with carefully engineered ergonomics to make extended use less painful. Encased in stainless steel and built on the Symbian S60 platform, the E71 supports Microsoft Exchange, allowing businesses to set up and maintain a push e-mail server for businesspeople on the go. The new device is also compatible with Microsoft Office and PDF document files. Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and HSDPA speeds are additional features.
