RIM has recently announced the launch of the first BlackBerry Flip handset, the Pearl 8220. The new Pearl Flip features an external display to preview e-mails, view the caller ID of incoming calls and preview new text messages. The flip (clamshell) design is part of an ongoing push into the consumer market for BlackBerry.
The BlackBerry Flip supports Wi-Fi connectivity but isn’t 3G capable, nor does it feature built-in GPS. The Pearl Flip allows the synchronisation of non-DRM music with iTunes. It also supports voice dialling, MP3 ring tones and a hands-free speakerphone. Multimedia features include a media player and a camera that doubles as a video recorder. Files can be stored on microSD cards.
Previously synonymous with corporate and business users, the latest BlackBerry handsets have more consumer-orientated features, including video and music players. The Pearl 8220 has a slimmed down keyboard and a trackball, similar to the original Pearl unit.
