In pictures: Samsung's Icon mobile phones

Samsung Australia recently unveiled four new mobile phones with full touch-screen capabilities: the Icon series.

  • The Samsung Preston Icon has a 2.8in TFT display, a 3-megapixel camera, an FM radio and a microSD card slot. It includes a "smart unlock" feature that enables users to open an application or shortcut by drawing a pre-assigned letter on the screen.

  • The first Samsung mobile phone to run the [[xref:http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/tag/google%20android|Google Android|More about: Google Android]] operating system is the Galaxy Icon. It features a 3.2in AMOLED display, a 3.5mm headphone jack, is HSDPA-capable and also offers Wi-Fi. The Galaxy Icon has 8GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot for extra storage.

  • The Samsung HD Icon has an 8-megapixel camera with flash, DLNA for media sharing and TV-out capability. GPS, an FM radio and 16GB (or 8GB) of internal memory along with a microSD card slot are other features.

  • The entry-level Icon mobile phone is the Samsung Preston Icon. Running a proprietary Samsung interface with the TouchWIZ UI, the Preston Icon is an HSDPA-capable mobile phone offering a compact design.

  • The Samsung Omnia Icon features Samsung's TouchWIZ UI interface overlay on top of the regular Windows Mobile interface. This allows the use of widgets and customisable shortcuts. The Omnia Icon also features DivX support and can record video at 30 frames per second.

  • The Samsung HD Icon is positioned as an "entertainment device". It boasts HD video recording at 720p and has a 3.7in AMOLED display. The HD Icon is the first full touch-screen Samsung phone to use the Symbian operating system, and it also features Samsung's TouchWIZ UI.

The phones in the Icon range are the Samsung Preston Icon, the Samsung Galaxy Icon, the Samsung HD Icon and the Samsung Omnia Icon. The Samsung Omnia Icon is a smartphone running the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It offers a 3.7in AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera and GPS, and is HSDPA- and HSUPA-capable. The Omnia Icon will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the OS is released later in the year.

  • As part of the Android platform, the Samsung Galaxy Icon offers the full suite of Google applications including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Calendar.
