  • Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ notebook

    Price: $1299

As back to school notebook specials ramp up, an unlikely brand is looking like a good contender for your money; namely, Sony. The Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ is a 15.5in, Intel Core 2 Duo–based laptop that looks good and is much more comfortable to use -- and much more powerful -- than a measly netbook. With this notebook you'll be able to run pretty much any document creation program you want; you'll be able to edit images comfortably; and you'll have enough grunt to edit videos and upload them to YouTube. Best of all, because the Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ is a large notebook, you'll get some much needed exercise while carrying it from class to class. In September we reviewed the [[artnid:317042|Sony VAIO VGN-NW15G]], which is a similar model to the VGN-NW17GJ, and we gave it an Editor's Choice award. This notebook looks to be just as good, and [[xref:http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1255509337532/sony-vaio-vgnnwgj-laptop|Harvey Norman has it for $1299]].

It has plenty of speed to run almost anything you throw its way — except the latest 3D games, so parents take note. The size and excellent keyboard of the ProBook 4510s make it a joy to use, and its 6-cell battery means you'll be able to use it away from a power outlet for almost three hours. You can pick it up from [[xref:http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Computers-and-Monitors/Notebooks-and-Laptops/HEP4510S|Officeworks for $943]]; that's $546 off its original price of $1489.
