Toshiba has a great bit of kit on its hands with the ultralight, 13.3in Portege Z830 laptop

  • You also get a VGA port in case you want to hook up to an older monitor or projector.

  • It's a very thin laptop (approximately 16mm thick), yet it has a good set of features.

  • Cooling s by way of a fan that extracts warm air through the rear of the chassis.

  • It's made out of magnesium alloy that has a honeycomb substructure, which adds more strength to the material. When the lid is closed, Toshiba claims the laptop can withstand up to 100kg of pressure.

  • The right side has a USB 3.0 port.

  • The right side has microphone and headphone ports, as well as an SD card slot.

  • Gigabit Ethernet is present as well as 802.11 dual-band Wi-Fi. The Satellite Z830 only has a single-band Wi-Fi module.

  • The keyboard is spill resistant and also backlit. The keys felt soft and had decent travel.

  • It's a laptop that weighs under 1.2kg and it feels very solidly constructed. It will run an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU as well as a solid state drive. Pricing for the Portege has not been announced yet, but the [[artnid:407997|Satellite Z830]], with an Intel Core i5-2467M CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD costs $1399.

  • The rear has two USB 2.0 ports as well as HDMI and the power port.

  • It has a 13.3in screen with a 1366x768 resolution and it's a matte screen -- you won't get any annoying reflections.

  • The Toshiba Portege Z830 ultra light notebook is practically identical to the Toshiba Satellite Z830 Ultrabook, but it's not an Ultrabook. The Portege can't carry that trademark because it features Intel Active Management Technology -- Ultrabooks aren't supposed to have that.

Other differences between the Portege and the Satellite include dual-band Wi-Fi, biometrics, a matte screen, Windows 7 Pro instead of Home Premium and a three-year warranty instead of a one-year warranty.
