A big laptop with good speed that costs $899
The Medion Akoya P7812 (MD 98770) is a 17.3in desktop replacement notebook that features an Intel Core i5-2430M CPU, 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 1TB hard drive and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics adapter. It's a great configuration for a laptop that costs only $899.
The right side has a built-in DVD burner, headphone and microphone ports, an SD card reader and a USB 2.0 port. It's also where you can find the power button and the cable lock facility.
The keyboard feels good to use and it even has a number pad, although it's a little cramped. The Akoya P7812 (MD 98770) goes on sale at ALDI supermarkets on 26 November. It's a notebook that's well worth checking out if you want an inexpensive desktop replacement computer that can even be used for a little gaming. The unit weighs 3.3kg and is 420mm wide, 280mm deep and 40mm thick with the lid closed.
As far as cheap laptops are concerned, it doesn't look too bad and almost everyone in the office who saw this beast liked its design.
The touchpad is a tad small at 82x40mm, but it's responsive and supports gestures. The left and right-click buttons aren't great though, as they are housed under the same piece of plastic.
The battery is removable and there is a large access panel through which you can repair or upgrade the Akoya. It has a spare 2.5in hard drive bay so that you can easily install a second SATA-based hard drive.
The left side has two USB 3.0-capable ports (the blue ones), another USB 2.0 port, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, VGA and the power port.
There aren't any ports on the spine of the notebook.
