In pictures: Xbox One unboxing, Southern-Hemisphere style

  • We picked up our Xbox One review model this morning, and started with a very summery unboxing. (Yeah, that just means we did it outdoors.) Check out - let's be realistic here - the last time this brand-new console will ever see natural light.

  • Under the outer cardboard sleeve is... more box. Yeah, we've played boxey-sleevey before.

  • More boxes inside boxes. The first piece of hardware you see is the Kinect sensor (peeking out the top there), which is perhaps telling of how central it is to the new Xbox experience. Or it was just a convenient layout when the packaging was designed. You know, either way.

  • Beneath the Kinect sensor/accessory box is the console itself.

  • The problem with black packaging? It gets really, really hot in the sun. Theft-risk aside, we seriously do not recommend leaving a newly-purchased Xbox One in the back of your car, or elsewhere in direct sunlight. There's your obscure-but-potentially-helpful tip of the day.

  • Accessories revealed in the top box.

  • Accessories from top-left to bottom-right: Power adapter, Kinect sensor, power cable, HDMI cable, chat headset, controller, batteries and manuals.

  • Accessories unpacked, from top-left top bottom-right: Power adapter, Kinect sensor, power cable, HDMI cable, controller and batteries, chat headset.

  • The console itself is shinier than its predecessor, but exactly what we were expecting, and what we've seen on display several times before (including at last night's launch). It's a box. With an X on it. That's, uh, pretty much it.

  • Xbox One enjoying its brief moment in the New Zealand summer sun. (That's the special sunlight with extra-damaging UV, for our Australian readers.)

  • Xbox One and controller, before heading inside for a close-up examination and setup.
