What's in the Chromecast box?

Here's what you get when you buy Google's media streaming device

  • Google Chromecast is a small media streaming device that can be purchased from JB Hi-Fi and Dick Smith Electronics for $49. It's a simple device that can be used to stream YouTube and other content to your TV. Here's what it comes with.

  • As you can see, the packaging is neat.

  • It flips open to give you info about the connections that need to be made, and how to set it up. There is no manual.

  • Here's the device itself. It's noticeably bigger than a USB stick, for example, but still small enough to be discretely hidden behind a TV.

  • It plugs in to one of your TV's HDMI ports.

  • The rear has a micro-USB port for power.

  • There's nothing on the bottom.

  • Beneath the Chromecast dongle is where all the cables are packed.

  • Google supplies a wall adapter with an attached USB cable to power the device. However, if your TV has a powered USB port, you can just plug the other end of the USB cable into that and save yourself from having to find a wall outlet for the adapter.

  • An extension cable for the HDMI cable can be used if your HDMI ports are in a location where the Chromecast can't fit. We recommend using it in any case, just to give it a bit of clearance from the TV (and because if you don't use it you'll probably end up losing it).
