Dell XPS 13: is this 2015's best looking laptop?

A refined design makes the 2015 version of the XPS 13 Ultrabook one of the nicest on the market

  • A size that's only just bigger than an A4 sheet of paper is just the beginning for this sleek Ultrabook, which we think is one of the best looking laptops on the market, if not the best. It's not a hybrid or convertible laptop that can split from the base or turn into a tablet; it's a straight up, regular laptop.

  • If you didn't know that it actually has a 13.3-inch screen, then you'd swear it was either an 11- or 12-inch model -- it's almost borderless. It can slip into a backpack almost unnoticed, and can fit into a over-the-shoulder bag with just as little effort. As you can see, it's a glossy screen, which can only mean one thing: it supports touch. Keep a cloth on hand to wipe fingerprints off the Gorilla Glass if you actually make use of the touch functionality -- or wear gloves. The resolution? A cool 3200x1800.

  • There is a nice little wedge shape to the XPS 13, which is nothing new, but it still looks clean, and the overall build quality feels as solid as ever. The stated thickness runs from 9-15mm.

  • Aluminium is once again used for the lid and the chassis.

  • Carbon fibre has been used to create the palm rest, which says helps keep the weight down while retaining strength and making the unit feel cooler. It feels smooth (not slippery) and it looks great with its weave-like pattern.

  • Right-side view: Kensington lock slot, USB 3.0, full-sized SD card slot.

  • Left-side view: power connector, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, heaset port, and battery power indicator.

  • The keyboard is backlit and the keys are full-sized for comfortable typing at any time of the day.

  • Processing comes from 5th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 CPUs, it can accommodate up to 8GB of RAM, and storage goes up to 256GB. Screen resolution is Full HD on the low-end models, and 4K (ultra-high definition) on the higher models. Expect to pay $1500 for the base model, and $2500 for the top dog.
