New Compaq Armada 7800 with Intel Pentium II

Compaq has announced the Armada 7800 notebook, based on Intel's 266MHz Mobile Pentium II processor, and implementing AGP for 66MHz video and graphics performance.

A new DriveLock security feature protects data by adding password protection to the hard drive ROM, not the system ROM, allowing protection to stay with the drive. There is also a new desktop expansion base, the ArmadaStation II, which has complete forward and backward compatibility with the Armada 7000 products, including a new USB port.

The Armada 7800 includes 64MB of DRAM, expanable to 160MB; an integrated S3 ViRGE/MX 64-bit graphics controller with 4MB of SGRAM; 5GB Smart hard drive in the MultiBay; integrated AC adapter; 13.3in TFT display; and a 20x CD-ROM with dual speakers. It has a Li-ion battery and the notebook weighs between 3.6-4kg, depending on configuration.

Volume shipments of the Armada 7800 will begin in early May, with a RRP of $10,495 for the Windows 95 model with internal 33.6Kbps modem.
