Uber app delivers ice cream on demand to Melbourne and Sydney today

Three flavours of Gelato Messina in Sydney; Helada Jauja in Melbourne

The online taxi-, limo- and private driver booking app Uber is delivering ice cream around Sydney and Melbourne today, with a fleet of ice cream trucks prowling the cities' CBD and inner suburbs.

In Sydney, the ice cream-on-demand service will run from 2PM to 10PM today (Friday July 19th), focused on Sydney's CBD and Eastern suburbs. Three flavours of Gelato Messina will be on offer — Bounty, Italian Nougat, and the crowd favourite Salted Caramel with White Chocolate.

"You won't see this level of service from any other taxi apps."

To order an ice cream delivery to your door, you'll need to have the Uber app (for Android or iPhone) installed, and an Uber account set up with a credit card associated to it.

Melbourne Uber ice cream trucks will be serving Argentinian Helados Jauja, with trucks circling the city's inner suburbs and business district.

$20 will get you a single 500ml tub of gelato or Patagonian ice cream, with additional tubs an extra $12 — if there are any left. All ice cream purchases are charged directly to the buyer's existing Uber account, so no cash is needed.

Uber makes a point of saying that it thinks demand for the ice cream delivery will be very high, and that availibility is limited; it says "not everyone will get ice cream."
