Airflow and good storage practices apparently makes your food last longer.

Sharp has offered some tips to get food lasting longer when refrigerated as part of a press release but they're actually worth reading - there are some great food preservation ideas here.

The presser talks about Sharp's latest range being, "Designed with one main point in mind - airflow. This is the important thing to consider when looking for a new refrigerator as effective airflow is not only good for your food but will require less constant cooling and therefore less power consumption. We'll have to test that down the line, but for now everyone can learn something from the following tips...

How to preserve food in the fridge

1. Keep meat uncut and wrapped until ready to eat.

This will keep the meat fresher and avoid contaminating other food items. Once opened, place on a plate and cover with plastic wrap or in an airtight container.

2. Keep fruits and vegetables separate

They give off different gases that can cause the other items to deteriorate

3. Evenly place food items on the shelves

... and do not over fill the refrigerator. This will allow the airflow to reach all items and keep the temperature consistent throughout the refrigerator.

4. Avoid washing fresh produce

... before storing in your refrigerator. The dampness can increase mould growth.

5. Hot food items should be cooled first.

Storing hot foods increases the temperature in the unit and the risk of food spoilage. Ensure all cooked food is wrapped securely or placed in airtight container.

6. Freeze small quantities of food at a time

... For best freezing - in order to freeze them quickly.

7. Store washed fresh herbs in zip lock bags

... and place in the freezer.

8. Keep frequently used items at the front

...of the shelves and easily accessible. This will reduce the loss of cool air when opening the refrigerator door.

And there you are. At this point it's probably fair to mention the products which caused the presser to get sent: Both the SJXE624FSL and SJXE676FSL are four door fridge/freezer units with a 36 step J-Tech inverter which allow them to be lower in power consumption. They also have express freezing and extra cooling functions together with an Ag CU Nano deodoriser filter to combat odours and bacteria leaving the interior smelling clean and fresh.
