Toshiba Debuts LCD for E-Books

The new 7.7-inch display, which supports Microsoft's ClearType text resolution enhancement technology, has a resolution of 150 pixels per inch and, said the statement, "approaches the quality of reading text printed on paper."
The greater resolution is made possible by the low temperature polysilicon structure which allows electrons to flow faster than conventional amorphous silicon displays, said Toshiba. Another advantage of using this type of display is that the LCD drivers can be directly mounted onto the display panel rather than on external circuitry so the space around the device is minimised -- an important consideration for designers of portable products.
The display has a resolution of 640 by 960 pixels, can display 262,144 colors, has a contrast ratio of 250:1 and weighs 150 grams.
Toshiba said it will begin mass production of the display in early 2001. Samples will be available from October at 100,000 yen ($US935) and the screen will get its public debut at the CEATEC exhibition in Tokyo from October 3.
