The best is yet to come: The 10 most anticipated games of 2011

Sure some great titles have already been released this year, but we think some of the best games of 2011 are yet to hit store shelves

  • Portal 2

We. Can't. Wait. The cake may be a lie, but [[artnid: 346733 |Portal]] was probably pretty close to being the perfect game when it was released and [[artnid: 350821 |we're expecting big things from the sequel]]. Australians will be able to get their hands on it in April. Did we mention multiplayer?...
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic

The only MMO to make our list, Star Wars: The Old Republic looks to be the best thing to happen to George Lucas' universe since Star Wars Galaxies. Okay, not a good comparison given that Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies left a sour taste in the mouths of some, particularly after the [[xref:http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/24/star-wars-galaxies-new-game-enhancements-cause-player-backlash/|NGE update]]. However, Knights of the Old Republic and KotOR II: The Sith Lords were both great games (although admittedly the latter suffered from serious flaws), and we're looking forward to seeing what BioWare manages to come up with. The Old Republic is expected to launch [[xref:http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=258996|"this year after the close of EA's fiscal 2011 (which ends March 31st, 2011)"]].
  • L.A. Noire

Hooray! Something new! Something original! Something from Rockstar! The aesthetic (film noir–inspired, herp derp) looks amazing, as do the facial animations of the characters. First Rockstar gave us probably the best Wild West game of all time — [[artnid: 346862 |Red Dead Redemption]] — and now it looks likely they will deliver the best detective game yet. Dust off your fedora for a May release.
  • Alice: Madness Returns

Another sequel, Alice: Madness Returns follows on from 2000's American McGee's Alice. Appropriately, the game takes place 11 years after the original. We are really champing at the bit to get our hands on this game — the trailers make it look delightfully twisted, as you would expect. Expect it in June.
  • Doom 4

We're looking forward to seeing exactly what direction id Software takes with Doom 4 — but most of all, we're looking forward to seeing just what the company's [[xref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_5| id Tech 5]] engine can do. And yeah, we don't have a screenshot sorry, so here's a picture of the original Doom's cover art. Oh how we loved that game. Sadly, no guarantees that Doom 4 will actually hit the streets in 2011, but here's hoping.
  • Duke Nukem Forever

    Just release it already.
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

[[artnid: 380720 |The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim]] drops on 11 November. And the anticipation is killing us. [[artnid: 380718 |And it will have dragons. Dragons!]] We loved Oblivion (and Morrowwind, and Daggerfall and Arena), and it's hard to see how Bethesda could go wrong with Skyrim.
  • There have already been some big name game releases in 2011 — LittleBigPlanet 2, [[artnid: 381001 |Dragon Age 2]] — but there's plenty more goodness to come. We've rounded up the top 10 video games that we want to get our hands on. It's extremely hard to cull the list of forthcoming releases down to just 10, so feel free to chime in with your outrage that we left out Gears of War 3 oh how could you do that and what no Deus Ex: Human Revolution you incompetent journalists. Etcetera, etcetera. Disturbingly, the list is very sequel-heavy.

    Batman: Arkham City

The sequel to [[artnid:315871|Batman: Arkham Asylum]] is due to be released in Australia on 19 October. Batman: Arkham Asylum was extremely well received, and you can expect more of the combination of fisticuffs and stealth offered by the original. Plus Batman's arsenal of gadgets, of course. Set in the slums of Gotham, Batman will have to rescue Catwoman from Two-Face.
  • Mass Effect 3

Sure it's Yet Another Sequel, but at least the Mass Effect series is original IP. The first two titles in the RPG series were good examples of just why so many people love BioWare, and we are expecting big things from Mass Effect 3. Expect it in Q4. And here's a Mass Effect 2 picture of Commander Shepard looking bad ass. Or, we spell it in the land down under, bad arse; though writing it that way makes us think of gastrointestinal disorders, so we tend to avoid it.
  • Bonus -- The game we'd really, really like to see but probably won't: Half Life 2: Episode 3

Oh how we long for Episode 3. We would sacrifice our first born, and yours too, to see the return of Gordon Freeman and the G-Man.
  • Diablo III

Is there much that needs to be said about this? It's only another sequel we've been 11 years for. Last we heard it was [[xref: http://www.rhythmism.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90988|"currently planned for release in 2011"]].
