In Pictures: First look - Motorola's new Droid RAZR lineup

We check out the latest additions to the company's Android-powered RAZR stable

  • A newly compact Droid RAZR, plus friends Motorola debuted the three latest models of its Droid RAZR line of Android smartphones on Wednesday at a splashy PR event in New York. Here are some quick first impressions.

  • Droid RAZR M The compact Droid RAZR M could be the biggest headliner of the three new devices, cramming potent hardware and a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced screen into a startlingly small package -- it's smaller than the iPhone 4S, but it has a larger display. Plus, it's available immediately for $99, though that factors in a $50 mail-in rebate.

  • Droid RAZR HD While the larger Droid RAZR HD isn't as impressive a feat of miniaturization as the RAZR M, it boasts the same hardware, along with an advertised 40% battery life improvement over the original Droid RAZR. The 4.7-inch screen -- which Motorola says beats the iPhone 4S in both color saturation and pixels per inch -- doesn't look too bad either.

  • Droid RAZR MAXX HD The biggest of the three devices launched at Motorola''s event, the RAZR MAXX HD is effectively identical to the RAZR HD, but with the already-solid battery life cranked up to 11. Motorola says the RAZR MAXX HD will make it through 13 hours of video playback before needing a charge. The RAZR HD and MAXX HD will be released before the holidays, the company says.

  • It's all about the milliamps Motorola placed a heavy emphasis on battery life at the launch event, arguing that modern 4G/LTE smartphones need to be able to make it through a whole day of heavy use without charging.

  • Here comes Jelly Bean All three of the devices will run Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, out of the box, but Motorola promised an upgrade to 4.1 (Jelly Bean) before the end of 2012.

  • Hardware The three devices differ only in their batteries, screen size and dimensions, according to Motorola. All use 1.5GHz dual-core processors, 1GB of RAM, front and rear cameras, NFC technology and 4G/LTE connectivity.

  • Verizon All three are also Verizon exclusives, so non-Big Red customers are out of luck, at least for the moment.
