In pictures: HTC Hero vs iPhone 3GS

We've been lucky enough to get our grubby mitts on the HTC Hero before its release in Australia (which will be "between now and October"). And what better way to show it off by than stacking it up against the juggernaut that is the iPhone 3GS!

  • Both the iPhone 3GS and the HTC Hero feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, though the Hero doesn't have the iPhone's lock screen button. The power key on the HTC Hero acts as a screen lock.

  • The HTC Hero's main distinguishing feature is the angled lip that houses the trackball and controls. It's distinctive and impressive, and looks even better in the flesh than it does in pictures.

  • Similar in size to the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero has a slightly smaller display than Apple's smartphone. Colour, clarity and viewing angles are similar and we really didn’t notice the smaller size when using the Hero. Both of these smartphones use capacitive touch screens and both support multitouch technology.

  • The HTC Hero has a non-gloss, Teflon-coated, plastic case that is excellent at keeping fingerprints at bay — unlike the iPhone 3GS' glossy, fingerprint-magnet backing. The Hero's 5-megapixel camera dwarfs the iPhone's 3.2-megapixel camera, but both are missing a flash.

  • The HTC Hero has more physical buttons than the iPhone. In addition to the BlackBerry-like trackball, the Hero has answer and end call keys and dedicated home, menu, search and back buttons.

  • The HTC Hero is charged via a standard mini-USB port, while Apple's iPhone 3GS uses a proprietary charging port.
