Back-to-school printer bargains

We look at the best and cheapest printers for the back-to-school season

  • [[Artnid:333254|Epson Stylus Photo TX810FW]]

    Price: $308 (Save $91)

Epson's high-end inkjet multifunction is handy for printing off photos and labeling CDs, and it isn't too bad around the office either. The touch-sensitive control panel makes it a breeze to use, while the automatic duplexer should mean you won't be racking up too high a bill for paper. Though Epson has a recommended price tag of $399, Harvey Norman is currently offering it [[xref:http://harveynorman.dynamiccatalogue.com.au/portal/offerdetails/epson_stylus_tx810fw_photo_multi_f___/12645454607559?CatalogueID=12634462730722&CatalogueID=&source=catalogueoffer&jump=&pageview=two|for $378]]. You can also get $70 back via redemption, bringing the printer's total cost down to $308 — making it an even cheaper option for printing school homework and photos.
  • [[Artnid:205636|Brother HL-2140 mono laser printer]]

    Price: $92 (Save $57)

Though inkjet printers and multifunctions are useful for printing off photos, they can become costly when it comes to consumables, and document print quality isn't always fantastic. Since high school and university students are likely to print off text documents most of the time anyway, it may be worthwhile purchasing a mono laser as a secondary printer. They're not that expensive either — Brother's [[Artnid:205636|HL-2140]] is currently available for $92 from both [[xref:http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2|Umart]] in Queensland and [[xref:http://www.itsky.com.au/catalog/partdetail.aspx?PartNo=BRO-PRN-17156|ITSky]] in NSW. With toners lasting 1500 pages, you won't need to worry about getting more consumables in a hurry.
  • [[Artnid:266688|HP Photosmart C5380]]

    Price: $99 (Save $120)

Though new printers are released every month, the technology inside them doesn't change much. That's why we can still wholeheartedly recommend HP's Photosmart C5380, which is an excellent inkjet multifunction even though it's over a year old. You can now get the Photosmart C5380 from [[xref:http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/printers/hp-hp-photosmart-c5380/435963|JB Hi-Fi for $99]]; $120 off its original $219 recommended price.

  • [[Artnid:280319|Canon PIXMA MX860]]

    Price: $247 (Save $52)

Though students tend to print frequently, they don't necessarily need their own printer; there are plenty of printers that will be good for the rest of the family as well as students. Canon's [[Artnid:280319|PIXMA MX860]] has plenty of connections and an automatic duplexer, and its scanner is good enough for digitising documents using OCR (optical character recognition) software. Harvey Norman is currently clearing out some old Canon models, and the PIXMA MX860 is one of those on the chopping block for [[xref:http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256967065571/canon-pixma-mx|$52 off]] the original $299 RRP.
  • Canon PIXMA MP250

    Price: $59 (Save $6)

Impulse buy printers are a tricky business: they may cost less than a tank of fuel, but consumables are likely to cost as much as, if not more than, the printer itself. Still, if you're stuck without a printer the night before that big assessment is due, Canon's PIXMA MP250 might just be what you need. Like the entry-level [[Artnid:324795|PIXMA MP490]], it's cheap and quite slow, but it will print documents and the odd photo without fuss. You can pick up the inkjet multifunction from [[xref:http://catalogues.officeworks.com.au/portal/offerdetails/canon_pixma_mp250_multifunction/12640339134168?CatalogueID=12631843876088&CatalogueID=&source=catalogueoffer&jump=&pageview=two|Officeworks for $59]].
