First test shots: Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G2, LUMIX DMC-G10

We road test Panasonic's latest interchangeable lens cameras: LUMIX DMC-G2 and LUMIX DMC-G10

  • Panasonic has released two new Micro Four Thirds-based cameras that are aimed at point-and-shoot consumers looking to step up to something better, or professional users looking for something less bulky yet as capable as a digital SLR. The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G2 replaces the [[artnid:273642|Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G1|Review: Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G1]] in the company's interchangeable lens camera line-up, while the Panasonic LUMIX DMX-G10 is a lower-cost option that will compete alongside the likes of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 and the [[artnid:340906|Samsung NX10|Review: Samsung NX10 interchangeable lens camera]].

We had the opportunity to road (and air) test both these cameras on a recent helicopter trip to the Crooked River vineyard in Gerringong courtesy of Panasonic. The following photos have been shot with either the G2 or the G10 and have only been cropped to fit this page. The colours and luminance are just as the camera captured them.

This shot was taken with the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G10 using the built-in monochrome mode.

  • This was taken in the Crooked River vineyard using the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G2 in monochrome mode. It's a handheld shot that came out reasonably crisp considering the 1/3sec shutter speed, but the camera also captured some nice motion blur from those keen to get a taste.

  • This was taken with the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G2. The colours straight out of the camera are vibrant. We took this in sports mode so the camera handled all the exposure details on its own.

  • One thing we love about the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G2 is silhouette mode, which does wonderful things to highlights and shadows.
