We unbox Apple's latest creation, the impressive MacBook Pro with Retina display

  • We've just got our hands on Apple's latest notebook, the MacBook Pro with Retina display. Let's unbox Cupertino's latest creation!

  • As you can see, the Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display comes in familiar Apple packaging.

  • The attention to detail in the box contents is no different to most other Apple products.

  • The Australian sales package includes all the relevant documentation, Apple's new 85W MagSafe 2 power adapter, and an AC wall plug and power cord.

  • Due to the new MacBook Pro's slimmer design, Apple has changed its MagSafe port, now called the MagSafe 2. It's not compatible with older chargers, though Apple will sell a seperate adapter ($11.99) if you want to use original MagSafe chargers.

  • The Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display comes in two configurations. The first ($2499) includes a 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB of flash storage, while the premium model ($3199) upgrades to a 2.6GHz processor and a 512MB SSD.

  • The new MacBook Pro with Retina display is thinner and lighter than the company's regular MacBook Pro line. In order to keep the size and weight down to 18mm thick and 2.02kg, respectively, Apple says it removed "bulky legacy technologies" like the traditional spinning hard drive and the optical disc drive. On the right side of the new MacBook Pro you'll find an SD card slot, a USB 3.0 port and a full-sized HDMI port.

  • On the left side is Apple's new MagSafe 2 power connector, two Thunderbolt ports, another USB 3.0 port and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Both the left and right side of the MacBook Pro features air induction vents for a new cooling system.

  • The thin and light design is certainly impressive, but the MacBook Pro with Retina display is not easily upgradeable. In fact, neither the RAM (soldered to the logic board) or the SSD (a proprietary drive) are user replaceable.

  • Apple claims the Retina display is less reflective than previous MacBook Pro displays. Although we haven't tested it extensively, we can tell you the screen is definitely less glossy than other MacBook Pro models. However, we would love Apple to offer a matte screen option.

  • Apple says the Retina display has a high pixel density so you can see everything with perfect clarity. The 2880 x 1800 pixel resolution is the highest ever seen on a notebook. It particularly excels at displaying text, as the above image shows.
