In Pictures: Google's new Nexus 5

It's here! It's here! Google’s new smartphone is (FINALLY) here!

  • The Nexus has landed When it arrived, it arrived with a whimper – after months of speculation, Google took the wraps off the Nexus 5 smartphone today at a surprise event in San Francisco. The LG-made device brings the Nexus series into line with the top dogs of the Android world. Have a look!

  • That display It's the first Nexus smartphone with the 5-inch, 1080p specs that are becoming the standard for Android flagships. The display is IPS based, and covered by Gorilla Glass 3.

  • That body The Nexus 5 is about the same size as other Android heavyweights like the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and HTC One. It's very slightly larger than the former device, though substantially lighter than the latter.

  • That camera Google's making a lot of noise about the Nexus 5's 8MP main shooter, which boasts optical image stabilization technology and advanced HDR.

  • That operating system The new version of Android (4.4, or Kitkat) is pre-installed on new Nexus 5s, packing advanced voice controls and a smaller memory footprint.

  • That hardware The Nexus 5 packs plenty of horsepower, including a 2.3GHz, quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC, 2GB of RAM, and an Adreno 330 GPU. Potent.

  • Those features The Nexus 5, additionally, features wireless charging (though it doesn't, apparently, ship with a wireless charger) and Google says the 2,300mAh battery will power the device through 8.5 hours of Internet use on Wi-Fi.

  • Those details The Nexus 5 costs $350 for 16GB of internal storage and $400 for 32GB, and is available in black or white. It's available now on the Play Store, though the 16GB models seem to have sold out within hours of Google's announcement. The company says the 32GB devices will ship by November 8.
