2009 Canon digital camera range unveiled

Details of the new Canon IXUS and PowerShot cameras revealed, including the waterproof Canon PowerShot D10.

  • Canon is set to kick off 2009 with its most impressive IXUS and PowerShot cameras yet. The new range comprises six models, including the 12x optical zoom Canon PowerShot SX200 IS and the all-terrain Canon PowerShot D10. For a look at the new range, including specifications and features, check out the following slideshow!

  • Perhaps the most exciting camera in the new lineup is the Canon PowerShot D10 — the company’s first waterproof compact camera. Similar in concept to the Olympus Tough range, this camera has been designed for outdoor activities, including swimming, snorkeling, surfing and skiing.

  • The Canon PowerShot D10 is waterproof for depths of up to 10 metres and freeze-proof for temperatures as low as -10°C; it can also survive drops up to 1.22m. The camera has a 12.1-megapixel (Mp) sensor with a 3x optical zoom. Other highlights include plus-sized buttons for easy operation, a range of detachable front covers with different designs and Canon’s Intelligent Auto technology.

  • As reflected by the iPod-esque image above, the Canon PowerShot D10 is primarily aimed at young adults who require a stylish camera for outdoor action. It will be available from May 2009.

  • A range of optional accessories will be available for the Canon PowerShot D10, including neck and cabin hook straps, a wetsuit carry-case and additional front covers. Stay tuned for an in-depth review soon.

  • Canon PowerShot D10 neck and cabin hooks (sold separately).

  • Canon PowerShot D10 carry case (sold separately).

  • The other standout model in the new line-up is the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. Following in the footsteps of the Canon SX100 IS and the Canon SX110 IS, the Canon SX200 is aimed primarily at travellers. It combines a 28mm wide-angle lens with a powerful 12x optical zoom, making it an ideal camera for outdoor photography.

  • In addition to its 12x optical zoom and wide-angle 28mm lens, the Canon SX200 IS also comes equipped with a high-definition recording mode that captures video at a resolution of 720p. Other highlights include a 12.1Mp CCD sensor, an extra-large 3in LCD display, a DiG!C 4 processor with Intelligent Auto functionality and RAW format recording.

  • The Canon SX200 IS will be available from April 2009.

  • Canon also debut its new top-of-the-range IXUS model: the Canon IXUS 990 IS. This ultra-stylish camera crams a host of advanced features into its slimline body. Featuring a 5x optical zoom lens (the largest zoom in the IXUS range) and a 12.1Mp CCD sensor, it’s a good option for casual users who are serious about photography.

  • The Canon IXUS 990 IS comes with high-definition (720p) video recording. It's also equipped with blink detection. Another new and interesting feature is Active Display: this lets you cycle through pictures stored on the camera by shaking it.

  • The Canon IXUS 990 IS will be available from April 2009.

  • The Canon IXUS 110 IS is the company's other flagship IXUS model for 2008. It incorporates a 28mm wide-angle lens with 4x optical zoom, a 12.1Mp sensor and an optical image stabiliser, along with all the latest IXUS modes and features.

  • Like the Canon IXUS 990 IS, the IXUS 110 IS comes with high-definition video recording, blink detection and Active Display. The camera can also add creative light effects to photos you have snapped, such as adding realistic looking stars. The Canon IXUS 110 IS comes in a range of colours and is expected to hit stores in March.

  • The next model in the IXUS range is the Canon IXUS 100 IS. This ultra-slim compact camera has been designed for social outings with an emphasis on style. Like the Canon IXUS 990 IS, it incorporates a 12.1Mp sensor, a high-definition movie recording mode, Intelligent Auto and blink detection. However, the optical zoom has been downgraded from 4x to 3x.

  • The Canon IXUS 100 IS is being billed by the company as the slimmest IXUS model ever. At just 18.4mm thick it will fit into almost any purse or pocket with ease. The camera comes in a range of colours, including black, gold and deep red. The Canon IXUS 100 IS will be available from March 2009.

  • The final camera in the new IXUS range is the Canon IXUS 95 IS. Colourful and affordable, it is designed primarily for casual users who want a good quality compact camera with lots of style. Key features include a 10.0Mp CCD sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens, a DV!C 4 processor with Intelligent Auto technology and "funky colours" (it says here).

  • The Canon IXUS 95 IS comes in the following colour schemes: lime green, hot pink, aqua blue, steel grey and silver. It will be available from March 2009.
