Ultrabook comparison

See what the Acer Aspire S3, ASUS Zenbook UX31 and Toshiba Satellite Z830 look like side by side

  • The Ultrabook is designed to be a slim and lightweight laptop that doesn't make many compromises when it comes to performance and features. The models currently on the Australian market might all look quite similar (as you can see from this slide and the next one), but there are many differences between them.

  • The [[artnid:407997|Toshiba Satellite Z830]] is the Ultrabook on the left, the [[artnid:407475|ASUS Zenbook UX31]] is in the middle and the one on the right is the [[artnid:406528|Acer Aspire S3-951]].

  • When opened, it's evident that the Toshiba is a little bigger than the rest in terms of screen height and also base depth, with the Acer being the smallest.

  • From this angle they all look like they are the same thickness. The ASUS in the middle tapers sharply towards the front, where it is 3mm thick, but at the back it's 18mm thick. The Toshiba on the left is actually the thinnest Ultrabook here, with a consistent thickness of 16mm from front to back.

  • When viewed from the side, you can see the difference in thickness much clearer. The Acer on the right is the bulkiest of these Ultrabooks. You can see just how deceptive the thickness of the ASUS Zenbook is as it slopes down towards the front.

  • We stacked them all up for no particular reason other than we wanted to. Actually, they are stacked according to weight. The ASUS on the bottom is the heaviest of these Ultrabooks at around 1.4kg, the Acer is around 1.35kg and the Toshiba is the lightest at around 1.1kg.

  • The Toshiba may be the lightest and thinnest of these Ultrabooks, but it also has the most built in features. It has a full-sized HDMI port, VGA, three USB ports (including USB 3.0), Gigabit Ethernet, separate headphone and microphone ports and an SD card slot.

The ASUS has two USB ports (one being USB 3.0), a micro-HDMI port, a single audio port and an SD card slot. It comes with adapters for Ethernet and VGA. The Acer has the fewest ports; you only get two USB ports (no USB 3.0) and full-sized HDMI, as well as an audio port and an SD card slot.

The Toshiba Satellite Z830 (PT22LA-001001) Ultrabook costs $1399, as does the Acer Aspire S3-951, which has a similar configuration (Intel Core i5-2467m CPU and 4GB of RAM) but it comes with a 320GB hard drives instead of a 128GB solid state drive like the Toshiba. The ASUS Zenbook UX31 (CUX31E-RY010V) Ultrabook is the most expensive at $1999. It has an Intel Core i7-2677M CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB solid state drive.
