Seagate's new 17GB Medalist hard drive

Seagate has added the Medalist 17240 to its line of 3.5in hard drives.

The 4.3GB-per-platter drive offers best-in-class performance, according to Seagate. Capacity points are 17.2GB, 12.9GB, 10.2GB, 8.4GB and 4.3GB. Stats are 9ms average seek time; 512K buffer; internal transfer rate of up to 188Mbits/sec; data transfer rate of 33MB/sec; MTBF of 400,000 power-on hours; and a three-year limited warranty.

The drive features Seagate's ID-less sector format, which allows more than 480K of the 512K data buffer to be used for user data.

The Medalist 17240 will be available in volume early 1999.
