German smart card company to manufacture in Vic

A German manufacturer of smart cards has set up its Asia-Pacific manufacturing and design base in Melbourne, investing $6 million in the new facility.

Giesecke & Devrient, originally a German banknote manufacturer and now a leading supplier of smart cards around the world, opened its facility in Knoxfield, Victoria, yesterday. A further $4 million will be invested in the plant and 20 jobs have been created.

The financial and telecommunication sectors will be Giesecke & Devrient's main focus, and the plant will carry out a number of operations including design, contact chip card milling and embedding, and card printing.
